Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To

The current Impact Entry Door line uses a 4-9/16 inch jamb depth with a composite frame, while older stock doors from roughly 2015-2019 often shipped with 3-5/8 inch jambs and aluminum frames. The label is usually on the hinge edge of the slab or the top of the frame head; look for a Mr-Glass sticker with an “MG-” prefix followed by a six-digit code.

The multipoint locking system is where we see the most variation. Current Mr-Glass units use a Hoppe or Fuhr mechanism with a 35/92 millimeter backset and 16 millimeter faceplate. Earlier units sometimes shipped with 35/80 backsets, and the faceplate width differs by 2 millimeters. That 2 millimeter gap is enough to leave the deadbolt misaligned with the strike box. We carry both backsets on the truck, but we verify the measurement during the survey rather than guessing from the model year.

Signs Your Mr-Glass Door Installation Is Failing

• Water intrusion at the sill after heavy rain. The composite or aluminum threshold develops capillary gaps where it meets the subsill, especially in Tamiami’s limestone-heavy soils that shift slightly with wet seasons. The fix is threshold removal, subsill resealing with backer rod and polyurethane, and reinstallation with a sloped pan.
• The multipoint lock handle turns but the bolts don’t retract fully. The gearbox inside the mechanism shears a tooth after repeated stress from pressure differentials during storms. A partial retraction leaves the top or bottom bolt extended, which jams the door closed or prevents it from latching.
• Visible daylight between the door slab and the frame weatherstrip. Hinge screws back out of composite jambs over time, or the hinges themselves sag under the weight of impact-rated glass. The slab drops 1/8 to 3/16 inch, and the compression seal no longer meets the adjustable strike.
• Condensation between the glass lites on an insulated unit. The spacer seal fails, which is a glass replacement, not a door replacement. But many Tamiami owners discover this only after the frame swelling from moisture distorts the door operation.
• The door sticks seasonally, worse in August. South Florida humidity swells wood frames and causes thermal expansion in dark-colored fiberglass slabs. If the original installer didn’t set the back gap at 3/16 inch minimum, the slab binds against the jamb.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing you can safely check yourself: open the door 90 degrees, grip the handle, and lift. If the slab moves vertically more than 1/16 inch, the hinge screws are loose or the hinges are fatigued. Tightening the screws with a proper driver is reasonable maintenance.

Everything else, we recommend against. The multipoint lock mechanism is under spring tension; disassembly without the proper release sequence can launch internal components. Threshold replacement requires removing the slab, which on an impact-rated unit means supporting 120-180 pounds of glass and steel while working on your knees. And any modification to an impact-rated assembly voids the NOA certification, which your insurance and your permit both depend on.
